5.0 out of 5 stars No Ordinary Amish Story, December 19, 2010
While I am not Amish fiction's #1 fan, I have read a few Amish titles which I've liked, and most particularly, Levi's Will by Dale Cramer. I've waited a long time to get my hands on a new book by Cramer, and I was not disappointed. The saga of the Daughters of Caleb Bender begins with Paradise Valley, a fascinating introduction to the Bender family in the early 1900s. Knowing that Paradise Valley is based on actual events with added details from the author's own family history made this story especially interesting to me. This book is a heart-tugging look at the life of one Amish family, their faith and unwavering devotion to family, hard work and God. I was drawn into this story and left wanting more.

Caleb Bender is a man of faith, steadfast in his beliefs until the law forces him to make a choice that means uprooting his family and beginning again in a strange new land. Though he is undaunted by a world that challenges his beliefs, he finds himself questioning those... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Male Author Captures Women's Viewpoints in Paradise Valley, January 24, 2011
I rarely read Amish tales, but I am thankful I read this one.

Dale Cramer, in the first of his Daughter of Caleb Bender series, relates a powerful 1920s story of Amish families who find themselves at odds with the state of Ohio's education laws. Caleb Bender leaves the farm his father and grandfather cultivated to seek freedom for his family in Mexico. Pioneers in a strange, wonderful land, they meet dangers that challenge their faith and beliefs in ways they never anticipated.

As the series name implies, Caleb is the family patriarch, but much of the action is seen through the viewpoints of his daughters: Rachel, Emma, and Miriam.

Again, I would not have predicted a male author could portray women's thoughts and hearts with such accuracy and vividness, but Paradise Valley accomplishes this--due to Cramer's wife's skillful proofreading of his manuscript, according to his acknowledgements.

Readers seeking adventure, contemplation,... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Grace and Wisdom, January 8, 2011
By
Eric Wilson "novelist" (Nashville, TN United States) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
Dale Cramer is one of my favorite authors, and his book "Bad Ground" was a masterpiece of modern storytelling. Of late, he has turned his knowledge of the Amish into a career-saving move by telling tales set against that well-loved backdrop of Christian fiction. Personally, I'm not a fan of Amish stories, particularly when they provide an escapist mentality, but I knew going into "Paradise Valley" that Cramer would paint life with all its colors, dark and light.

The story is set in 1922, and revolves around the Bender family. Their Amish way of life is threatened by local laws requiring they send their children to a government school instead of letting them work and learn on the farm. Soon the Benders are headed south, hoping for peace and freedom in Paradise Valley, a plot of land deep in the Sierra Madre of Mexico. There they will encounter ruthless banditos, rich hacienda owners, poor mestizos, and a culture that challenges their way of thinking. As always, Cramer... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars A Sweet Romance and Wonderful Tribute to Military Servicemen, January 6, 2010
By
Stacey (Las Vegas, NV USA) - See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE)
"Jenna's Cowboy" by Sharon Gillenwater is one of the sweetest romances I've read in a long time. And if you are familiar with my reviews, you know that I read quite a few wonderful books! I love the Texas landscape that the author has painted in this novel that showcases ranching and cotton farming with equal story time and meticulous description to educate the reader and put her in the position that the main character, Nate Langley, occupies. Nate returns home from serving in the military to help his ailing father on the family cotton farm, taking on a part-time job with a neighboring rancher for some extra income. Nate is reunited with Jenna Callahan, the rancher's daughter and an old friend from high school. Happy to learn that Jenna is divorced and hoping to pursue a relationship with her as he should have back in school, Nate tries to balance a growing love with his own denial about sleepless nights and post traumatic stress disorder.

This book tenderly honors... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars JENNA'S COWBOY, March 24, 2010
By
JENNA'S COWBOY was a tender romance. Jenna Callahan Colby is back at Callahan Crossing after the breakup of her loveless marriage. Feeling a bit like damaged goods, she hides out on the family ranch trying to make a new life for her and her young son, Zach.

Nate Langley has also come back to Callahan Crossing after his stint in the war. Suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, he struggles to get a grip on life. Working as a hand on the Callahan ranch is just like old times, and the feelings he had for Jenna then are even stronger now.

Both Jenna and Nate struggle with their attraction to each other. Both wounded, they are afraid to let someone in. Jenna has Zach to consider, and Nate is afraid he can't give Jenna what she deserves.
I enjoyed JENNA'S COWBOY though I did find it overly predictable. The depth of the Callahan family rounded out the novel, allowing you a comfortable sigh as you reached the end. Predictable as it may be, I... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Great story, abrupt ending, January 23, 2010
It is plain to see in reading this story that Sharon Gillenwater is good at her research and explains things very well. I know nothing about ranching or farming, but I felt from the explanations and pictures drawn by her imagery were great. I thoroughly enjoyed the romance of the story and the cover is perfect for the character of Nate. While reading this book I was thinking about the different things that I was going to say in the review about how much I enjoyed the characters and the visualizations as well as their witty banter. Easily I could say that I enjoy this author and look forward to reading her books in the future. However, I felt that the last three chapters were such a lurch from the rest of the story. Perhaps I am on my own in that opinion, but I felt that it went in rather abruptly and then the story just ended. I know why "it" happened and understand that, but I feel that the "big event" could have had more closure. It felt to me that the story was going along great,... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, Even For Non-Teachers, July 31, 2010
By
Deanna Figueroa (San Diego) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Learn Me Good (Kindle Edition)
Learn Me Good is an often laugh-out-loud, 'probably-true' story of an engineer who loses his job and ends up teaching 3rd grade math in Dallas, TX.

The book is presented as a series of emails that Mr. Wooden...uh, Woodley...errr...Woodson (read the book, you'll understand that part) sends to a friend at his prior employer about the kids he's teaching and the crazy things they do and say. It's worth the small price of the book just to read the subjects & clever names with which he closes every email, I found myself snickering at several.

I've never raised or worked with children, so I don't read this genre (and wouldn't have, had I not read about it on the Kindle Boards), but I laughed loud enough to startle my dog a few times and found most of the stories to be at the very worst, amusing. Most people who have had or taught small children would get quite a kick out of it.

The author states up front that he's changed all the names and that 'most'... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars What elementary teachers really do, November 18, 2006
By

This review is from: Learn Me Good (Paperback)
John Pearson has managed to put his wry sense of humor into the book, Learn Me Good. For anyone who has spent their days working with elementary-school students, many of these situations will seem familiar -- but funnier because of John's writing style. For those whose only experience in elementary school classrooms was the period of time that they were in elementary school, John's emails describing his life as a teacher will give insight into what teachers really do all day long.
This book would make a great gift to any teacher.

This review is from: Learn Me Good (Paperback)
John Pearson's "Learn Me Good" is an enjoyable little book that you can get for the Kindle fairly cheaply. As many others have explained, the book is a semi-autobiographical account of Pearson's first year of teaching as told by a series of emails to a former coworker at "Heat Pumps R' Us."

There are several laugh out loud funny moments in the book, usually describing kids being innocently silly or budding psychopaths. It is a pleasant and humorous read and for the most part is a G-rated read that most anyone could enjoy. The few PG-13 jokes (among the funniest) would probably go right over kids heads anyhow.

A few things keep the book from earning a few more stars. One ongoing joke about a kid incorrectly spelling a famed four letter word is met at one point by a reference to "Turret's Syndrome." Admittedly this is unintentionally hilarious, but goes to the greater point of the book needing a bit of editing. Also, at times I found Pearson tried a bit... Read more
